Our History |
|
Born Free Charter Service opened in 1978 with the Born
Free II, a 35-foot Allman. The first captain was Captain Milton Pearce,
a well-known Bahamian captain who fished and chartered throughout the Bahamas
for over sixty years. Captain Pinder worked as his first mate and learned
all the basics of deep-sea fishing from Capt. Pearce.
|
|
The Born Free II was the first charter boat on the dock
on Paradise Island. In 1986 we added Born Free III, a 48-foot Chris Craft.
The larger more powerful boat allowed us to offer charters further away
from Nassau to the Exuma Cays and the Berry Islands. And in 1993 we added
its sister ship Born Free IV, also a 48-foot Chris Craft to the fleet.
|
|
Over the years the Born Free Charter Service has become
very well known among local tour guides and hoteliers as the best for deep-sea
fishing. We offer all types of charters from fishing 15-20 miles out in
the ocean to light tackle fishing close to shore over some very beautiful
and bountiful reefs. Captain Pinder has always enjoyed shark-fishing and
considers it to be his specialty with catches of 10-12 foot sharks on many
occasions. We continue our great tradition of providing the best for our
customers as we attempt to reach many new fishermen and water sporting enthusiasts.

Captain Philip Pinder
|
|
There is no substitute for experience. Some 25 years ago Capt. Pinder
was the first captain to set up a deep-sea fishing charter business
on Paradise Island in The Bahamas. He was inspired to name his boat
Born Free after seeing the well-known movie of the same name. He already
had a great love of all water activities as he grew up in Nassau just
a half block from the Nassau Harbour.
Captain Pinder started as the mate on Born Free II in 1978 and learned
all about deep-sea fishing from his Godfather Master Captain Milton
Pearce of Nassau. Captain Pinder says, “The best part of the day is
having a satisfied customer at the end of the charter.” He and all
of his crew do everything they can to attain this goal. He is proud
that a majority of his business is made up of return customers, some
who have been fishing with him at least once a year for over 20 years.

OPTIONS FOR DEEP SEA FISHING CHARTERS:
|
|
We offer either half day or full day charters.
HALFDAY CHARTERS are 4 hours from 8am to 12noon or 1pm to 5pm. We
can leave as early as 7am for the early bird fisherman. You can go trolling
on the ocean or do light tackle fishing over the reefs. One great thing
about fishing here is that your lines go in the water within 20 to 30 minutes
of leaving the dock, no long runs to get to the fish.
FULL DAY CHARTERS are 8 hours starting anytime from 7am to 10am.
What a great way to spend a day on the sea. You can combine fishing with
snorkeling and picnicking or just have a great day of fishing. With the
extended time you will cover more of the fishing ground and have much more
fishing experiences. You may choose to do one of our specialty full day
charters to the Exuma Cays or the Berry Islands, each about 35 miles from
Nassau.
The prices of both half day and full day charters cover up to six passengers
and include all bait, tackle, and ice. Food and drinks cost extra. We'll
assist you with your food by doing the shopping for you (snacks, fried chicken,
sandwiches, beer, sodas, etc.) and collect at the time of charter.

BORN FREE (II)
CHARTER SERVICE opened in 1978 with the BORN FREE II, a 35-foot Allman sport
fisher. Its capacity is six people per charter. There is a small cabin and
bathroom and a covered deck with benches to get out of the sun. Sit upstairs
with the captain and enjoy the amazing view and spot your own catch.
BORN FREE (III)
BORN FREE III joined the charter service in 1986. It is a 48-foot Chris Craft.
It was completely refurbished from bow to stern including installation of
new engines in the fall of 2002. Capacity is 20 people but we recommend 6-8
on board for a fishing charter. The boat has a comfortable salon, bathroom,
and large cockpit with a fighting chair. It will provide the best for a day
of deep sea fishing.
BORN FREE (IV)
BORN FREE IV was added in 1993. It is the sister ship to Born Free but is
a fully equipped luxury yacht with 2 bathrooms, galley, private
stateroom and large deck for sunning. Capacity is the same, 20 people, but
again we recommend keeping the group to 6-8 people for a great fishing trip.
EQUIPMENT: All of our boats are equipped with the best Penn International
rods and reels for deep-sea fishing and light tackle fishing. We use primarily
ballyhoo with different lures for bait.
